Steven Pinker is an experimental psychologist who conducts research in visual cognition, psycholinguistics, and social relations. He grew up in Montreal and earned his BA from McGill and his PhD from Harvard. Currently Johnstone Professor of Psychology at Harvard, he has also taught at Stanford and MIT. He has won numerous prizes for his research, his teaching, and his nine books, including The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works, The Blank Slate, The Better Angels of Our Nature, and The Sense of Style. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, a Humanist of the Year, a recipient of nine honorary doctorates, and one of Foreign Policy’s “World’s Top 100 Public Intellectuals” and Time’s “100 Most Influential People in the World Today.” He is Chair of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary, and writes frequently for The New York Times, The Guardian, and other publications. His tenth book, to be published in February 2018, is called Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress.

Anthony Calvillo won 3 Grey Cups with The Montreal Alouettes as their star quarterback. In professional football he is the all-time passing yard leader.


Otis Grant is a 2 time North American Boxing Federation middleweight title holder. He is also the first black Quebecer to win a WBO championship.


Before the Montreal International Jazz Festival, there was Doudou Boicel, owner of Montreal's legendary Rising Sun Jazz Club and founder of the landmark Rising Sun Festijazz at Place des Arts. The Encyclopedia of Music in Canada states, "The festival movement in Canada began in earnest in 1978 with the first Festijazz organized by Doudou Boicel."


Alexandra Beaudry was waiting for a lung transplant due to her battle with cystic fibrosis. When I photographed her for Reader’s Digest in 2014, she had been living at l’Hotel Dieu hospital for several months. Alexandra received her transplant and id doing well today. She was part of a petition for organ donation to become mandatory in Quebec. Reduce wait times for patients waiting for organ donors is a matter of life and death.

Tanya St Arnauld was the victim of an acid attack in 2012 by her ex-boyfriend. Selection Readers Digest wrote an article about Tanya's difficult road to recovery.
